Varanasi: The testing trial of the much-awaited urban ropeway project between Rathyatra and Girjaghar in Varanasi began on Tuesday during the Sawan season.

After the rope was installed, gondolas are being operated as part of the testing process. Officials said load testing will be conducted to thoroughly assess the safety and structural performance of the system. Any shortcomings identified during the testing will be immediately rectified.

The testing process will be repeated at least four times to ensure that the ropeway is completely safe before it is opened for the public.

The 3.8-kilometre ropeway corridor will connect Cantt Station with Godaulia, with intermediate stations at Kashi Vidyapeeth and Rathyatra, while Girjaghar will serve as a technical station. The project will have a total of five stations and 29 towers.

During testing, each gondola will be assessed with a load equivalent to 10 passengers or around 800 kg, along with an additional 10% load, taking the total test load to approximately 880 kg.
